In October, 2018, a few hundred Hondurans gathered at the bus station in San Pedro Sula, with the idea that they would band together, in a "caravan" to make their way across México. After news reports spread - and Donald Trump labeled this caravan a criminal invasion - the numbers swelled to over seven thousand. Declaring themselves refugees, the caravan converted into a Central American exodus. With the soles of their feet falling off, their skin cracked, baked dark red from the unforgiving Isthmus sun, they made their way across Mexico - largely on foot - defying Mexican authorities and appealing to their sense of justice all at once. Braving some repression, the real barrier came at the northern border - where US immigration enforcement and police lobbed tear gas and rubber bullets onto Mexican territory to beat back the asylum seekers.
